The family

I never realized how wonderful guinea pigs are until I got my first one at the age of 31. They are such unique animals. Each one having such distinct personalities. I have 6 now.

Checkers Marie aka the Queen

Checkers was my first guinea pig. I knew nothing about them when I got her. My husband bought her for me when my hamsters died. Boy Guinea pigs are much different than hamsters. So much more personality. She was a very skittish thing. She was about a year when I got her. A couple of weeks after I got her, she gave birth to 2 beautiful little ones. Rusti Mae and LeRoi. I gave LeRoi to my friend.

Checkie is very proper. Everything must be just so. I call her my little republican. She will move her food bowl if it's an inch away from where it should be. If she doesn't want to be held. She will bite and bite hard!

Checkers is now about 6 years old, has arthritis and doesn't run around much anymore. She still eats with gusto, and bites as hard as ever.

Marilyn Monroe

Marilyn was a rescue guinea pig from Hempstead Town Shelter on 2/15/08. She is a peruvvian pig. I've never had one before. She's very peaceful and just loves too mush. She's also my pishi girl. She will pee just about anywhere. Her favorite thing is getting her hair brushed by daddy.

Bertie Boy

What can one say when they have such a special animal. Bert was one of a kind. He loved life and was just the most amazing pig ever. He was very inquisitive. He wasn't scared of anything. Would walk down the middle of the hallway with his head held high. He loved his blueberries...I never knew how special he was until his passing in December 2006. I still miss this boy.

Ernie and Bert came to me from a friend of a friend of a friend. She could no longer take care of them so I took them in.

Bert had dental issues. His back tooth would constantly grow outward into his gums. Every 2 weeks I would take him to my vet to extract the tooth. My vet, Dr. Hoefer even created a chin sling that we both heard about in a vetarinarian guide to try to re-align Bert's jaw but he didn't like it much.

Finally after 2 years, we decided to further investigate the problem. It turns out that he had a tumor in his jaw which was causing the problem. Dr. Hoefer and I both agreed that surgery would be the way to go. Bertie was down to 600 grams at this point and would only eat critical care. He made it through the surgery but died the next day.

This page is dedicated to him.
